Jacklyn Loves Donuts

Oh Those Donuts…they make me go nuts.

Do you know why I love this place? Their sugar donuts. Which I have renamed “The Tony Montana Donuts”. Look, if you’re going after sugar donuts, you’re obviously not worried about getting diabetes (or have chosen to ignore the danger), so why not go to the extreme? The donut itself was very fluffy, not greasy but what has put this place apart from all the other sugar donuts I’ve had in my lifetime is the copious amount of delicious granules they’ve smothered on top.

It’s impossible to eat these without making a mess…but it was so worth it. Mmmm…sugar coma.

Side note: I’ve discovered why I usually tend to go for more the cake donut variety as opposed to the yeast donuts. Yeast donuts, unless you find a good place (like here), usually have so much grease that you’re left with a coat of grease on the roof of your mouth. Do not fret, I will sacrifice my mouth to deliver you the good news of perfectly made yeast donuts…just for you guys.

If I wasn’t in love with Vancouver already, this place just mutiplied my love by a million. Cartems’ donuts are not only delicious but they are innovative. Maker’s Bourbon Bacon donut? Carrot Cake donut? Earl Grey donut? I mean…do you really need me to list more? You can check out the flavors on their website here.

So how does one chose a flavor? You don’t…between my sister and I, we ordered 8 donuts. I have to say, my two favorites were the Earl Grey and the Campfire (pictured top left two). The Campfire was so incredible…I had to order another one. It was the perfect richness of chocolate, not too much, not too little. The Earl Grey tasted just like an Earl Grey tea. All their donuts were moist, they just melt in your mouth.

I have to give Jeff a great thank you for his hospitality. He was so nice, and very helpfull in making my decision because when it comes to me and sugar…I’m extremely indecisive.

Tuesday I went up to LA to meet a friend for a hike, but before every hike…one must have a pre-hike meal. Knowing my obsession (if that’s what you want to call it) for donuts, he suggested Nickel Diner.

I’ve actually seen this place on Instagram before under the donut tag. The one the comes up the most is the Maple Bacon Donut but when I saw that they had and Irish Car Bomb donut…I was intrigued.

The donut was delicious but I don’t feel that Irish Car Bomb accurately describes it’s taste. I felt like it was closer to tasting like a carrot cake (equally fantastic), regardless, I was happy with my choice. Don’t worry…I didn’t try attacking a 3 hour hike on donut alone, I had eggs and a chicken apple sausage. This place was really cute and their food and service was awesome.

I’m looking forward to try this place again. They also had a Red Velvet Donut and a Strawberry Crumb Donut that looked amazing…now to start the arduous tasks of trying to chose between the two for next time.

Often when I talk to people about donuts, I get asked what my favorite donut place in San Diego is. It’s sad to say, but I haven’t found one that I can absolutely say is my favorite. I haven’t found a place here yet that really knocks me off my feet. So with that disclaimer aside, I must introduce you to Donut Haven. I stopped in to Donut Haven when I was in the midst of a stroll around San Diego. The thing I like about this place is the Oreo Donut. The Oreo Donut came into my life when I visited San Jose…and can I tell you how happy I am that I found this in San Diego.

I also had a Coconut Donut (I’ve been on a coconut kick lately…for reasons unbeknownst to me) and it was delicious. The glaze was really good, sometime you get a donut with bad glaze and it almost gritty-ly coats the roof of your mouth…I hate that feeling.

Both donuts were very fluffy and the mom and pop that own this place are really cute and friendly. Would definitely visit this place again.

Before I can tell you about Cafe Dulce, I have to tell you about my nightly sleeping ritual. To fall asleep I search the “donuts” tag on Instagram and just stare at other people’s pictures of donuts. I’ve seen many photos of Cafe Dulce come up (mostly their Maple Bacon Donut). Monday my friend and I went to the Japanese Village Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles and to my pleasant surprise…there was Cafe Dulce.

I’m not a huge bacon fan so when I saw the Strawberry Cream Donut…I was sold. Everything about this donut was amazing. The fluffy texture of the donut and cream, how ripe the strawberry was…and do you see the pink glitter glaze on the strawberry!? Amazing. This donut was appealing not only in taste but in visual. They also had a Green Tea Donut…which, if I ever pop by a Cafe Dulce, will be the next donut I try.
